The Niue Department of Health has declared a COVID-19 outbreak, reporting 99 active cases as of today. Since January 11, 45 new cases have emerged this week, with an equal number recovering.
Head of Public Health, Grizelda Mokoia, emphasized the likelihood of higher actual case numbers and urged residents to take precautions. She noted that funerals, public gatherings, and incoming flights have contributed to the recent surge. Four individuals have been hospitalized.
This marks the first significant increase in cases since November 2022, when Niue reported a total of 380 cases. Mokoia stated, “In November 2022 we had a total of 380 cases, so the feeling that we have is already we might be closer to that number.”
Although COVID-19 mandates were lifted in March 2023, Mokoia advises those testing positive to isolate to prevent further spread. She recommends wearing masks in public spaces, regular handwashing, and proper coughing etiquette.
“Now because we don’t know who’s already got COVID-19, it would be advisable to mask up when you go to the shops and public gatherings and practice hand washing as well as proper coughing etiquette,” Mokoia advised.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere to health guidelines to manage the outbreak effectively.
