The 7th Pacific Media Summit, co-hosted by the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) and the Niue Media Association, was officially opened by Niue’s Prime Minister, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi, at Avatele-Liolau Grounds.
Prime Minister Tagelagi emphasized the importance of media in fostering vibrant democracies across the Pacific, stating, “The summit offers a platform for robust discussions on critical issues facing the media and our communities.” He highlighted Niue’s dual vision for the summit: showcasing the island’s rich culture and celebrating 50 years of self-governance.
The summit also featured two key initiatives. Australian High Commissioner Katy Stuart launched the Pacific-Aus TV platform, increasing Australian content available to Niuean audiences. Additionally, Prime Minister Tagelagi introduced the Vision Pasifika Media Awards, focusing on environmental reporting, particularly on plastic pollution. The awards, facilitated by SPREP, will close in April 2025.
Over 70 journalists from across the Pacific are attending the summit under the theme, “Charting a Resilient Future: Pacific Media Navigating Press Freedoms, AI, and Geopolitical Interests.” Prime Minister Tagelagi expressed pride in Niue hosting the event, emphasizing the need for small islands to be included in regional dialogues.
The Summit ends on Friday.
