A high-level New Zealand delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, is to start a Pacific tour, with Tonga as the first stop.
“Given New Zealand’s place and influence in the region, our visit will also reinforce our commitment to collectively responding to the many and varied strategic issues and challenges facing both the Pacific and the wider Indo-Pacific,” Mr. Peters stated.
“New Zealand has deep and longstanding cultural links with the Cook Islands, Samoa and Tonga and I am looking forward to reinforcing those,” said Dr Shane Reti, Minister for Pacific Peoples and Health. He emphasized discussions on shared health challenges and collaboration.
Prime Minister Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Eke told the media last Friday that the meeting with the delegation will be about strengthening Tonga’s relationship with New Zealand.
The 40-member delegation includes Climate Change and Energy Minister Simon Watts, Courts Minister Nicole McKee, and other parliamentary members. Their agenda focuses on strengthening bilateral relations, addressing regional challenges, and supporting development goals.
Last February, Peters was in Tonga on a similar mission where he and his delegation met with the former government led by Siaosi Sovaleni and also joined the opening of the new Pharmaceutical & Medical Facility in Veitongo.
The delegation will arrive in Tonga on Thursday 10th and depart on Saturday 12th with visits expected to Hawai’i, and Vanuatu.
