The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has completed the first phase of removing fuel and pollutants from the wreck of HMNZS Manawanui off the coast of Samoa. Recovered fuel has been offloaded at Apia’s port as part of ongoing efforts to minimize environmental risks.
“The recovery of fuel and other pollutants from Manawanui has progressed despite adverse weather conditions,” said Commodore Andrew Brown, NZDF Senior National Representative for Operation Resolution.
Salvors transported tanktainers holding recovered pollutants to the Port of Apia and returned with empty containers to resume the process above the wreck site southwest of Upolu.
“The barge is expected to make several trips to Apia during the fuel removal phase,” Brown added.
A 2km safety buffer zone remains around the site to ensure safe operations. Meanwhile, NZDF personnel are assisting with site monitoring and supporting the Samoan government’s sampling and analysis efforts.
Brown noted that recent water testing has allowed Samoa to reduce the precautionary fishing ban along Upolu’s south coast, expanding access for fishing activities.
“We anticipate that latest results will drive a further reduction of the precautionary zone,” he said.
The NZDF emphasized its commitment to minimizing environmental risks throughout the operation.
