Okoa villagers in Vava’u fear their water supply is tainted by waste from the nearby Kalaka rubbish dump.
Concerns have been raised in Tonga’s Parliament over potential groundwater contamination in Okoa, Vava’u, allegedly caused by seepage from the Kalaka rubbish dump.
Dr Mo’ale ‘Otunuku, the Member of Parliament for Vava’u 14, highlighted the issue, stating that the Okoa community was excluded from discussions about the environmental impacts of the dump and plans for a new waste disposal site in Pangai.
“The Kalaka dump is full and has been closed,” Dr ‘Otunuku informed Parliament, noting its proximity to the ocean where locals fish for food.
Deputy Prime Minister Taniela Fusimalohi confirmed plans to close the Kalaka site following his recent visit to Vava’u. He stated that a team from his ministry is investigating the matter and will conduct water testing in nearby areas.
The Kalaka dump’s location near the ocean raises concerns about marine pollution, especially as residents rely on local fish for sustenance. Previous reports have highlighted the risks of groundwater contamination from waste disposal practices in Tonga, emphasizing the need for proper waste management to protect water sources.
As investigations proceed, the Okoa community awaits further information on the safety of their water supply and the government’s plans to address the issue.
