The government recently clarified its new regulations on vehicle imports, saying that cars over 10 years old that were already en route to Tonga before the new regulation’s approval will still be allowed entry.
This comes following amendments to the Excise Tax Act 2023, which initially banned vehicles over 15 years old, later reducing the age limit to 10 years. The updated regulation officially took effect in August.
Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku said that owners of affected vehicles must contact the Ministry of Revenue and Customs to obtain necessary approvals and arrange for collection upon arrival.
The stricter import regulation was reportedly prompted by a request from the Transport Department, which cited the growing number of vehicles and increasing congestion on the roads.
The policy change highlights government’s effort in managing rising vehicle numbers while allowing flexibility for those already in transit.
