The 2024 Cook Islands Games are set to kick off with a grand opening ceremony on Friday, October 4, at 6 p.m. at the National Stadium in Nikao. Over 3,000 athletes from 11 island teams will march in a parade, marking the beginning of two weeks of fierce competition and celebration of Cook Islands culture.
Teams from Aitutaki, Atiu, Mangaia, Manihiki, Mauke, Mitiaro, Palmerston, Pukapuka, Rakahanga, Rarotonga, and Tongareva will compete in 25 sports codes, showcasing athleticism, teamwork, and island pride. The games, running from October 4 to 19, unite communities and celebrate “The Pride of the Islands.”
Organized by the Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee, the event promises to be a vibrant cultural showcase, reconnecting friends and family. Lawn bowls will launch their competition this weekend with an official flag-raising ceremony.
“The Cook Islands Games bring our islands together in a spirit of friendly competition,” said a representative from the organizing committee. “We look forward to seeing athletes and supporters from across the islands come together.”
The Cook Islands Games continue to grow in size and significance, strengthening connections across generations and promoting island unity through sport.
