New Zealand police have seized 515kg of methamphetamine concealed in steel beams, in what authorities describe as the country’s “second largest” meth bust.
Five men, including two New Zealanders living in Australia, were arrested in connection with the shipment, which originated from the United States.

Customs officers uncovered the meth after noticing irregularities during x-rays of the steel beams. Detective Inspector Colin Parmenter said the shipment could have produced 25.7 million doses of the drug.
The men were arrested during raids in Auckland and Waikato, including two caught dismantling the beams at a rural property. Charges range from methamphetamine importation to firearms possession.

Parmenter hailed the operation as a “significant disruption” to drug networks in New Zealand, while Customs’ Terry Brown emphasized that the bust prevented over $570 million in social harm. Investigations are ongoing, and police have not ruled out further arrests.
