A new programme aimed at providing healthier homes for Pasifika families has launched in South Auckland. The Pacific Healthy Homes initiative, an extension of the Healthy Homes Initiative funded by Te Whatu Ora-Health NZ, will support over 500 families.
Originally started as a pilot over 10 years ago, AWHI has become a well-established programme, reducing household crowding and creating warm, dry homes in South Auckland and Waikato. The Pacific Healthy Homes initiative focuses on older Pasifika communities, offering support for families, particularly those affected by health conditions like pneumonia, heart disease, and diabetes.
AWHI Relationship Lead Evita Toala praised the programme’s expansion, saying it’s great to have a service for older whanau. “It’s for our people,” she emphasized, encouraging families to get involved.
Pasefika Family Health will deliver the initiative, working with families from Otahuhu to Papakura. Team leader Letele Tuiafitu Tiseli called it “a great support from the government,” urging families to embrace the help.
Participant Vaivaifolau Kailahi shared his experience, encouraging others to use the service, noting that without AWHI’s support, many may overlook the benefits of a healthier home.
