The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Secretary General, Baron Waqa, confirmed a cyber security attack on its Fiji-based offices this year. Waqa stated that the incident had been isolated, but the identity of the perpetrator remains unknown. A forensic report is being finalized to determine who was behind the attack.
The revelation comes amid controversy surrounding the PIF Leaders’ Meeting communique, where a section reaffirming relations with Taiwan was initially included, then removed. China’s Ambassador to the Pacific, Qian Bo, expressed anger over the issue, while Waqa emphasized that leaders’ discussions are confidential and left the matter at that.
Accusations have surfaced, suggesting China might be responsible for the cyber attack, though Waqa stressed these are unconfirmed. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, denied involvement, calling the allegations “politically motivated disinformation.”
Waqa assured that PIF systems are now secure and operational. He highlighted the growing regional security challenges, including drug trafficking and cyber crimes, but urged caution regarding accusations until the final report is complete. The decision on whether to release the report publicly will depend on PIF members.
