During the Seventh Pacific Meteorological Council Meeting (PMC-7) in Port Vila, a two-day Media and Communications Mana Class was held to enhance the communication skills of Pacific meteorological and disaster management communities. The training, hosted on September 11-12, aimed to improve communication during extreme weather events such as tropical cyclones and floods, which often impact Pacific nations like Vanuatu.
Organized by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the training emphasized building strong media relationships.
“Effective communication is key to ensuring critical messages reach communities during disasters,” said SPREP Meteorology Adviser Salesa Nihmei.
The sessions focused on working with media, social media strategies, and disaster communications, with contributions from Radio New Zealand and Pasifika TV. Over 50 participants from Pacific nations attended, alongside members of Vanuatu’s disability community to promote inclusive communication.
