A new security awareness training program aims to fortify the Pacific police workforce against escalating cyber threats, emphasizing the critical role of governments and organizations in safeguarding digital assets.
The initiative, facilitated by Cyber Safety Pasifika and funded by the Australian Federal Police, recently held a training session in Niue. Participants were trained to view employees as both the first line of defense and a potential vulnerability within cybersecurity frameworks.
“The training focuses on crimes prevalent through the use of cyber,” said Fiji’s National Community Policing Coordinator, Emosi Uluilakeba. “When we talk about cybercrime, it is simply a crime where cyber is being used.”
Key focus areas included cyber safety awareness, cybercrime legislation, and upskilling officers in investigations.
Uluilakeba underscored the importance of collaboration across Pacific nations to share knowledge and proactively educate communities, highlighting the distinction between cyber safety—protecting users—and cybersecurity—safeguarding systems.
