Paris closed out the 2024 Summer Olympics with a spectacular and star-studded closing ceremony at the Stade de France on Sunday, as it handed over the hosting duties to Los Angeles for the 2028 Games. The ceremony marked the end of two and a half weeks of extraordinary sports and emotion, showcasing Paris’ unique ability to blend grandiose cityscapes with Olympic glory.
The event featured a dramatic entrance by Hollywood star Tom Cruise, who descended from the stadium’s roof to the iconic “Mission: Impossible” theme. After thrilling the crowd, Cruise took the Olympic flag from gymnast Simone Biles and sped off on a motorcycle, setting the stage for LA’s upcoming Games. The grand finale also included pre-recorded performances by American stars Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg, and Dr. Dre, filmed against the backdrop of California’s beaches.
Paris’ closing ceremony was a blend of celebration and somber reflection. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach delivered a poignant call for peace, emphasising the Olympic Games’ role in inspiring a culture of peace in a turbulent world.
The ceremony also highlighted the achievements of the Paris Games, where the Eiffel Tower and other landmarks became integral parts of the Olympic experience.
As the Olympic flame was extinguished by French swimmer Léon Marchand, the ceremony transitioned to a lively celebration. Athletes danced and sang, reveling in the artistic and musical performances. The Games’ focus on gender parity was highlighted by the presentation of medals in the women’s marathon, reflecting Paris’ commitment to spotlighting female athletes.
With Paris now a chapter in Olympic history, the world turns its gaze to Los Angeles, where the next chapter of Olympic grandeur awaits in 2028.
