The first Speaker’s Debate of 2025 launches 10 July, tackling the controversial issue of deep-sea mining.
The public forum, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in Nukuʻalofa, will explore the economic benefits and environmental concerns of seabed mining—a sector Tonga entered in 2011.
Hosted by the Legislative Assembly, the event will feature five expert speakers, including legal, industrial, and environmental leaders, and conclude with a parliamentary-style debate between two sitting MPs.
Victor Vescovo, an investor in heavy industry and aerospace, and Lori Osmundsen, an international environmental lawyer, will share global perspectives. Rose Lesley Kautoke, a specialist in the Law of the Sea, and Taniela Kula, CEO of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, will offer local insight.
Muimui Napa’a Lilo, Country Manager of Tonga Offshore Mining Ltd. (TMOL), will represent the private sector. TMOL is working in the Clarion Clipperton Zone to harvest critical minerals for the global energy transition.
Parliamentarians Hon. Viliami Uasike Latu and Hon. Johnny Grattan Vaea Taione will argue for and against seabed mining respectively.
Organisers say the event is open to all.
