Moana Pasifika head coach Fa’alogo Tana Umaga has named Patrick Pellegrini and Tevita Ofa on the bench for Friday night’s Super Rugby Pacific clash against the Highlanders, giving both players their first taste of top-flight rugby.
Sydney-born Pellegrini, who played for Tonga at the 2023 Rugby World Cup and 2024 Pacific Nations Cup, was taken aback when told he would be making his Super Rugby debut.
“I was pretty shocked to be honest,” Pellegrini said. “It’s always been a dream to play in Super Rugby and I’m very excited and grateful for the opportunity.”
He reflected on his journey from Australia to England before returning to play closer to home.
“For a team like Moana closer to my roots and family, it means a lot,” he said.
Tevita Ofa, the 2024 Counties Manukau Steelers MVP, also earns his first call-up. Umaga praised the young winger’s work ethic, highlighting his rise from the Chiefs wider training squad last year to earning a spot in the Moana Pasifika setup.
“He has worked hard in the preseason to earn his spot,” Umaga said.
Moana Pasifika will wear their heritage jersey for the first time on Friday, honouring the legacy of the Pacific Islanders team. Kick-off is set for 7:05 pm at North Harbour Stadium, Albany.
