Prime Minister Hon. Hu’akavameiliku, commissioned the upgraded wharf in Faleloa, Foa Island, Ha’apai last week. This project, valued at $300,000 pa’anga, funded by a Government grant, marks progress in Tonga’s maritime infrastructure, particularly for the outer islands.
Originally constructed in the 1980s, the Faleloa Wharf had deteriorated due to natural disasters and rising sea levels, with parts of the structure submerged during high tide. Acknowledging the urgent need for reliable maritime access, the Government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Ports Authority Tonga, responded to this much needed upgrade.
The new wharf, elevated by 1.25 meters, is designed to withstand varying tides, ensuring safe and accessible passage for passengers and cargo. The structure includes three different levels, addressing the tidal fluctuations that previously hindered operations. Additionally, dredging around the berthing area has improved docking conditions, and solar lighting has been installed to enhance nighttime safety. Both sides of the wharf have been reinforced to endure future environmental challenges.
The upgraded Faleloa wharf is a major lifeline for the residents of Faleloa, Foa Island, and Kauvai Ha’ano, who regularly travel to Lifuka for work, education, and other needs. The District Officer of Kauvai Ha’ano, Mr. Siosifa Tu’itupou Maka, expressed gratitude for the project, saying, “This upgrade has made a significant difference in the lives of our people. We can now travel without concern for the tides, which allows us to conduct our daily activities more efficiently.”
This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure across the outer islands, ensuring safe and sustainable transportation for all residents as it continues with a similar project for Nomuka and Uiha Islands later this week.
