Prime Minister Sovaleni is set to face a vote of no confidence in parliament today Monday after a week-long delay.
The motion, initiated by MP ‘Aisake Eke, marks the second attempt to unseat Sovaleni, following a failed vote in September 2023 where the government prevailed 14-11. Eke is confident of success this time, claiming stronger backing.
“Although there are still one or two that are unsure, there seems to be very strong [confidence] that the vote of no confidence will go their way,” said Kalafi Moala, RNZ Pacific’s Tonga correspondent.
Relations between Sovaleni and King Tupou VI have reportedly been strained. Moala added, “The fact that there are nobles involved shows they feel comfortable that the vote of no confidence is not something that [the King] is against.”
Sovaleni criticized the timing, noting the election is only 11 months away. He argued the mechanism is being misused, contrary to the constitution’s intent.
