A second motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku has been received by the Legislative Assembly, the Speaker of Parliament announced during this morning’s parliamentary session.
The motion, submitted by Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Eke of Tongatapu 5 and backed by ten MPs, was lodged on Saturday, November 23.
“The Office of the Legislative Assembly is carrying out tasks in respect of the motion as required by clause 50B of the Constitution and the Rules of Procedures of the House,” said the Chief Clerk.
This marks the second attempt to oust PM Hu’akavameiliku during his first term. A similar motion failed last year, with 14 votes against and 11 in favour.
The development follows King Tupou VI withdrawing his confidence in the Prime Minister earlier this year.
Further updates on the parliamentary process will follow.
