As COP29 approaches, Prime Minister Hon. Hu’akavameiliku who is also Pacific Islands Forum Chair has called for a unified push to keep the 1.5°C target within reach.
“Our survival cannot be compromised. Climate change is the single greatest threat to the livelihoods and security of the Pacific,” he said, emphasising the need for decisive action as leaders gather in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Hu’akavameiliku emphasized the Pacific’s longstanding commitment to COP negotiations, noting efforts by Pacific leaders have ensured global recognition of vulnerable nations that contribute least to climate change yet suffer the most.
He highlighted the role of the Pacific Political Climate Champions, coordinated by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and the One CROP team, in spotlighting Pacific priorities.
Key issues include climate finance, oceans, and loss and damage.
“Our Pacific nations and Forum Leaders have built momentum for 1.5 climate action… The outcomes of COP29 must deliver on what is non-negotiable—our survival.”
COP29 starts today and runs until November 22.
