Police arrested 42 people in a weekend crackdown on public intoxication and drunk driving.
Tonga Police set up roadblocks and checkpoints across Nuku‘alofa and Tongatapu, detaining 27 for public intoxication and 15 for driving under the influence. Detainees ranged from 18 to 75 years old, including 39 men and three women.
The operation aimed to “ensure that everyone is guaranteed a safe journey home and a safe road to be on,” according to a Tonga Police media release.
It follows similar efforts like June’s “Operation Safe Streets,” which previously led to 18 arrests related to drink‑driving and disorderly conduct.
Police urged motorist to ensure public safety. “Please plan ahead for a designated sober driver as your choice can cost lives including your own.”
