Tonga Police arrested 48 people over the weekend in a major operation targeting alcohol-related offences and public disorder.
Tonga Police conducted a series of operations across Tongatapu over the weekend to proactively maintain public order and safety. The initiative included roadblocks in Mataki’eua, sobriety checkpoints, and patrols of known gathering spots.
Among those arrested, the youngest was 17 years old. A significant number were detained for drunkenness, disorderly behaviour, and driving under the influence. Police have urged parents to monitor their children’s whereabouts.
The operations were supported by community volunteers from the village of Pea, who assisted with roadblocks and patrols in Mataki’eua. This collaboration aims to foster a safer environment for all residents.
In response to recent unauthorised gatherings, including a bush party involving over 100 individuals in Mataki’eua, police have implemented temporary road closures every Friday and Saturday night from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am, effective from 23 May 2025. This measure, enacted under Section 127 of the Tonga Police Act, seeks to prevent further disturbances and protect agricultural areas.
Tonga Police are also addressing concerns over school-related violence, particularly with the commencement of the inter-college rugby season. They are working closely with schools to promote a peaceful environment and have called on the community for support in ensuring a safe and enjoyable season for all.
The public is reminded to consume alcohol responsibly, refrain from driving under the influence, and respect the Sabbath. Any breaches of the law should be reported to 922.
