Police arrested 51 individuals during weekend operations targeting alcohol-related offences and public disorder.
The crackdown, conducted across Tongatapu, focused on roadblocks, sobriety checkpoints, and patrols in areas known for alcohol consumption. Among those arrested were 16 drivers charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, and three who refused to undergo alcohol testing which is a criminal offence under Tongan law. Twenty nine individuals were also apprehended for public intoxication, and three for illicit drug-related offences.
The arrests spanned a wide demographic, with 45 males and six females aged between 16 and 61. Police expressed concern over the involvement of youth in these offences, urging parents and guardians to monitor their children’s whereabouts, especially during weekends.
In a related incident, a 21-year-old probationary constable was arrested in Nuku’alofa on Saturday for possession of illicit drugs. The Drug Enforcement Unit intercepted a vehicle suspected of drug distribution, leading to the arrest of the constable and two other men, aged 21 and 31. Seized items included methamphetamine, cash, and drug paraphernalia.
Tonga Police reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on drug use and supply, stating, “Drug use and supply will not be tolerated in any way.” They also reminded the public that refusal to participate in alcohol testing constitutes an offence, with non-compliant individuals held accountable.
The operations are part of ongoing efforts to maintain public safety and order. Police encourage the community to report illegal or suspicious activities to their nearest police station or contact 922.
