Tonga Police have charged 14 individuals following a large gathering at Mataki’eua early Saturday morning.
Approximately 130 people assembled at a bush area in Mataki’eua from Friday night into early Saturday, prompting police intervention after a tip-off from the Tongatapu 7 constituency village police.
Deputy Police Commissioner Tevita Vailea stated that 34 vehicles were present, with loud music and people dancing continuing into the morning. “Some were drunk and were charged for being drunk in public places and were kept at the Nuku’alofa police station,” he added.
Police interviewed most attendees, charging 14 with offences including public intoxication. The youngest in the gathering was under 18, and the oldest around 50, with most being female.
Authorities are investigating how long such gatherings have been occurring, noting concerns that these events have persisted since nightclubs were closed. A special operation with village police patrols is underway to prevent similar gatherings.
Such large gatherings were previously curtailed during COVID-19 restrictions by police and the army. However, this event, with over 100 attendees, is unprecedented in recent times.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing public order and health regulations in Tonga.
