Tonga Police have imposed weekend night road closures in Mataki’eua following recent unauthorised mass gatherings.
Effective from Friday, 23 May 2025, sections of Mataki’eua Road will be closed from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am every Friday and Saturday night until further notice. This measure, enacted under Section 127 of the Tonga Police Act, aims to prevent further unauthorised mass gatherings that pose risks to agriculture, livestock, and public safety.
The decision follows an incident where approximately 130 individuals assembled in a bush area of Mataki’eua from Friday night into early Saturday morning. Police intervened after receiving a tip-off from the Tongatapu 7 constituency village police. Subsequently, 14 individuals were charged in connection with the gathering.
In a media release, Tonga Police stated: “Tonga Police are fully committed to protect our community and ensure that the enjoyment of others does not affect the rights and safety of the wider community.” They urged anyone with information about other mass gatherings to contact them.
The Minister of Police, Paula Piukala told reporters at Friday’s press conference that last weekend’s bush gathering at Mataki’eua is serious concern and his ministry will respond to it quite strongly.
The closures are part of ongoing efforts to maintain public order and safety in the region. Authorities have not specified an end date for the road closures, indicating that the measures will remain in place until further notice.
Residents and motorists are advised to plan their travel accordingly and to follow the new road closure times to avoid disruptions. Tonga Police continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
