Fifty people arrested over weekend in Tonga Police crackdown on intoxication and drink-driving.
Tonga Police confirmed 50 arrests from 16 to 17 June, targeting alcohol-related offences across Tongatapu.
Among those detained were 44 men and six women, aged between 16 and 57. Most arrests related to public intoxication and driving under the influence—behaviours police say threaten public safety.
The operation aligns with recent weekend crackdowns: earlier this month, 42 individuals were arrested under similar circumstances in Nuku‘alofa.
“We reaffirm that such behaviour will not be tolerated, and our operations will continue to focus on those who choose to act in defiance of the law,” Tonga Police reiterated in a statement.
The force also acknowledged community cooperation. “We remain firmly committed to working in partnership with the public to build a safer, stronger, and more law-abiding society for all.”
This enforcement surge follows concerns raised over rising anti-social behaviour during weekends, including incidents of disorderly conduct, public drinking, and at least one drug-related arrest reported earlier this month.
