New Zealand police have confiscated over $413,000 from former Air New Zealand baggage handler Matangikolo Piukana, who played a key role in a drug syndicate importing methamphetamine through Auckland Airport.
Piukana was a “logistical organiser” for the group, assigning baggage handlers to specific flights to smuggle methamphetamine from Malaysia into the country. The drugs bypassed customs and were driven off airport grounds.
In connection with the operation, Piukana has pleaded guilty to importing meth and conspiracy to import the drug. He awaits sentencing.
Police recovered $316,900 hidden at Piukana’s sister’s home and $24,470 from his own bedroom. An additional $71,920 from a family bank account was forfeited. The High Court ruled that $413,290 in total will be surrendered to the Crown under the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery) Act 2009.
Piukana’s sister, Sanlolan Piukana, and her husband, Sitaleki Maka, were sentenced to 12 months of home detention for receiving the cash.
The syndicate’s leader, Nigel Iuvale, described as “the head of the snake,” received an 18-year prison sentence. Other participants, including airport staff, have faced jail terms of up to 12 years.
Justice Christine Gordon noted Piukana facilitated the smuggling of 110kg of methamphetamine, reaping significant illegal profits.
