A 49-year-old man has died in a suspected drunk-driving crash in Fungamisi, Vava’u, prompting a road safety warning.
Tonga Police said the man was traveling westbound when he collided with another vehicle, causing significant damage to both cars.
Authorities suspect he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash and was not wearing a seatbelt.
“The doctor reported that driving under the influence and suspected failure to wear a seatbelt contributed to his death,” police said.
The incident has renewed calls for safer driving practices, with police urging motorists to follow road rules to prevent further tragedies.
“Tonga Police continues to advise all drivers to prioritize their safety and ‘Always Buckle-Up!’ at all times,” the statement read.
“It is never okay to drive under the influence of alcohol. Taking precaution measures can save lives.”
Police extended their condolences to the family of the deceased and reminded drivers to act responsibly behind the wheel.
Authorities are expected to increase road safety awareness campaigns as they push for a reduction in alcohol-related accidents.
