Laiana McClinton has become the first Polynesian heritage athlete to win both the 100m and 200m titles at Florida’s Class 4A State Championships.
The 17-year-old junior from Largo High School clocked 11.75 seconds in the 100m and 23.67 seconds in the 200m, surpassing national records for Tonga, Samoa, and American Samoa.
McClinton’s victory marks the first time in 33 years that a Largo High School student has secured state titles in these events. Her mother, Janesia Tautalatasi, expressed immense pride, stating, “Double State Champion! Super proud of this girl!”
Of Tongan, Samoan, and African American descent, McClinton’s heritage includes ties to prominent athletes like Vai Sikahema, the first Tongan in the NFL, and Junior Tautalatasi, an early Samoan NFL player. “She has the best of three worlds!!” her mother noted.
McClinton’s achievements coincide with Pacific Islander Heritage Month, adding cultural significance to her accomplishments. Her aunt, Sina Sikahema, remarked, “She did it during Pacific Islander Heritage Month, no better time to show the world what we’re made of!”
Eligible to represent Tonga, Samoa, or the United States, McClinton’s future in athletics looks promising. Her dedication and performance have not only set new records but also inspired many within the Polynesian community.
