Tongan households will pay more for power from April, following a 9.29% tariff increase.
The Energy Commission has approved an 8.31 seniti rise per kilowatt hour (kWh), lifting the electricity tariff from 89.47 to 97.78 seniti/kWh. The new rate takes effect from 1 April 2025.
The Commission stated the increase reflects higher diesel prices, which rose by an average of 17 seniti per litre (8.58%) between January and March 2025. Diesel is the primary fuel used by Tonga Power Limited (TPL) for electricity generation.
The tariff is reviewed quarterly based on diesel price movements and annually in line with inflation. The adjustment process is governed by the Electricity Act and the Concession Agreement between TPL and the Commission.
The Competent Authority, the government agency responsible for setting diesel prices, approved the fuel price increase effective 3 March 2025.
The new electricity tariff will be adopted by TPL and reflected in customer bills from April. The Commission will continue to monitor fuel prices and adjust tariffs accordingly to ensure fair pricing for consumers.
