Prime Minister, Dr. ‘Aisake Eke, announced that the government is reviewing the agreement for hosting the 2031 Pacific Games, focusing on necessary preparations to ensure successful execution.
Speaking at a press conference last Friday at the St. George Government Building, Dr. Eke emphasized the national obligation to fund the event and outlined the government’s commitment to a comprehensive six-year plan, which is due to be presented in parliament.
“We are currently reviewing the agreement and identifying what is needed to do it well,” Dr. Eke said.
Tonga secured the bid to host the 2031 Pacific Games in October 2024, marking the first time Tonga will host the event since the 1989 Pacific Mini Games.
The Prime Minister highlighted that preparations are already underway, particularly concerning infrastructure development, to meet the standards required for the Games.
“It’s our national obligation to fund this event, and we must have a six-year plan in place,” Dr. Eke added.
The detailed plan, focusing on infrastructure and logistics, is expected to be tabled in parliament in the coming months.
