Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku survived a vote of no confidence when Parliament voted by a majority of 14 – 11, against a motion to oust the Prime Minister.
This took place on Wednesday 6 September after a day and a half of the charges and response being read out in Parliament.
Forty six charges were filed against the Prime Minister and his government including accusations of mismanagement, decision making with conflict of interest, lack of transparency in financial matters, and allegations of breaching the law.
The Prime Minister’s responses to the charges were also read out.
But in the end when put to vote, 14 members voted against the motion of no confidence; and 11 voted for it.
Those who voted in support of the Prime Minister included from the People’s representatives: Tevita Puloka (TT1), Hu’akavameiliku (TT3), Dulcie Tei (TT6), Jonnie Taione (TT8), Sevenitini Toumo’ua (TT9), Veivosa Taka (Ha’apai 13), Saia Piukala (VV14), Samiu Vaipulu (VV15), Viliami Latu (VV16).
Those of the nobles’ representatives who voted in support included: Lord Vaea, Lord Tu’iāfitu, Lord Tu’ilakepa, Lord Tu’iha’angana, Lord Fohe.
The members who voted against the Prime Minister included: ‘Uhilamoelangi Fasi (TT2), Mateni Tapueluelu (TT4), ‘Aisake Eke (TT5), Piveni Piukala (TT7), Kapelieli Lanumata (TT10), Taniela Fusimalohi (‘Eua11), Mo’ale Finau (Ha’apai 12), Vatau Hui (Niua17). There were three nobles who voted against the Prime Minister. They included Lord Tu’ivakano, Lord Nuku, and Prince Kalaniuvalu Fotofili.
