A 21-year-old probationary constable has been arrested for possessing illicit drugs during a police operation in Nuku’alofa.
Tonga Police confirmed the arrest occurred last Saturday after the Drug Enforcement Unit intercepted a vehicle suspected of drug distribution. Two male passengers, aged 21 and 31, were detained, and methamphetamine, cash, and drug paraphernalia were seized.
“This is not a reflection of who we are,” said the Commissioner of Police, expressing gratitude to the dedicated officers of Tonga Police.
The constable has been suspended without pay and will face court proceedings. Both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
The arrest higlights ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes in Tonga. Earlier this year, police arrested a 41-year-old man from Lapaha following the seizure of 3.5 kilograms of methamphetamine.
Tonga Police urge the public to report suspicious activities, reinforcing their commitment to eradicating illicit drugs from communities.
