Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump engaged in a two-hour phone call on Tuesday, discussing steps toward resolving the Ukraine conflict.
President Trump proposed a 30-day comprehensive ceasefire, aiming to halt all hostilities. However, President Putin agreed only to a temporary cessation of attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, stopping short of a full ceasefire.
The White House characterized the conversation as “very good and productive,” emphasizing both leaders’ commitment to achieving lasting peace.
President Putin expressed concerns that a temporary ceasefire might allow Ukraine to rearm and mobilize more soldiers. He also reiterated demands for the cessation of Western military aid and intelligence support to Kyiv as prerequisites for a broader ceasefire.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed skepticism, accusing Russia of continuing attacks despite the proposed ceasefire.
Both leaders agreed to initiate technical negotiations in the Middle East, focusing on implementing a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, with the ultimate goal of establishing a full ceasefire and permanent peace.
