King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u of Tonga will make a state visit to Fiji from 8 to 12 July 2025.
Their Majesties have accepted an invitation from Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, Head of the Mataqali Vuanirewa of Tubou Village, to attend the installation ceremony of the Sau Ni Vanua Ko Lau and Tui Lau on July 10th in Tubou, Lakeba.
The Sau Ni Vanua Ko Lau is a paramount chieftaincy title in Fiji’s Lau Islands, reflecting deep historical ties between Tonga and Lau. The ceremony involves traditional rituals, including the presentation of a coronation turban and kava drinking, symbolising the conferral of chiefly authority.
An inter-agency task force has been established to coordinate the logistics of the royal visit, highlighting its significance in strengthening cultural and diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The visit highlights the enduring bonds and shared heritage between Tonga and Fiji, particularly within the Lau archipelago.
