Samoa’s Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, has survived a no-confidence vote amid ongoing political tension.
The motion, led by opposition leader Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, was defeated by a decisive 34-15 vote in Parliament.
The vote followed a turbulent period within the ruling FAST Party, which saw Fiame at the helm of a minority government. Despite this, party members aligned with Fiame to reject the motion.
Tuilaepa had requested the vote after a series of internal disputes, including a criminal charge against a senior FAST member.
Fiame, who made history as Samoa’s first female prime minister, took office in 2021 after a contested election.
Her leadership has been challenged by political drama, but her victory in this vote bolsters her position amid the party’s internal struggles.
