Samoa’s ongoing power outages are devastating local Airbnb businesses.
Since February, Upolu’s electricity supply has been intermittent, forcing the Electric Power Corporation (EPC) to ration power. Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa cited multiple causes, including underground cable faults, severe weather damage, and generator breakdowns.
Airbnb owner Rosie Ah Yen emphasized the necessity of generators, noting that outages have damaged essential equipment like computers and microwaves.
Another operator, speaking anonymously, urged government intervention, stating, “They’re killing so many businesses.”
In response, the government and EPC are implementing measures, including the arrival of five rental generators by April 5, to alleviate the power shortage.
The Finance Minister has also supported declaring a state of emergency to facilitate international assistance.
As Samoa grapples with these challenges, local businesses remain hopeful for swift and effective solutions.
