The rollout of a national sanitation project has started for Ha’apai starting with Matuku and Tungua.
The Department of Climate Change, under the Ministry of MEIDECC, has initiated the National Sanitation Project in the outer islands, selecting Matuku and Tungua as pilot sites. This initiative aims to enhance sanitation and bolster climate resilience in vulnerable communities.
The MV Koe Kelesi Pe transported contractors, supplies, and materials to support the project’s implementation, ensuring all necessary resources are in place.
Aligned with Tonga’s Joint National Action Plan 2 (JNAP2) and the Tonga Strategic Development Framework II (TSDF II), the project hlights the nation’s commitment to a healthier and more climate-resilient future.
The Department of Climate Change emphasized the importance of community collaboration, stating, “This project highlights the strength of collaboration between government and communities. Together, we can tackle the challenges of sanitation and climate change, ensuring that solutions are sustainable and community-driven.”
As the project progresses, further consultations and implementations are planned to extend improved sanitation infrastructure across other areas of Tonga, fostering awareness and education around hygiene, health, and climate resilience.
