South Korean authorities detained impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol early Wednesday morning following an hours-long standoff at the presidential residence.
Yoon’s arrest stems from his December 3 declaration of martial law, which was later rescinded by the National Assembly. His impeachment and an arrest warrant swiftly followed, though a prior attempt to execute the warrant earlier this month failed.
Security staff initially blocked investigators from entering the presidential residence, but authorities eventually forced their way in to apprehend Yoon.
In a video statement released after 11 a.m. Wednesday, Yoon said, “I have decided to appear before the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials to prevent any unnecessary bloodshed.” However, he added, “I do not acknowledge the investigation by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials.”
Supporters and protesters had braved freezing temperatures overnight, camping near the residence to either block or support the warrant’s execution. The crowd dispersed after Yoon’s arrest as he was transported to a government facility for questioning.
The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) now has 48 hours to interrogate Yoon before deciding whether to seek extended detention or release him.
Yoon’s arrest marks an unprecedented moment in South Korean history, with a sitting president detained on corruption and abuse of power charges.
