Defence Ministers from across the South Pacific gathered in Auckland today to discuss regional security challenges, with a focus on partnership and the future, according to New Zealand Defence Minister Judith Collins.
The South Pacific Defence Ministers’ Meeting (SPDMM) brought together representatives from New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, France (New Caledonia), Tonga, Chile, and Papua New Guinea.
“Collaboration through SPDMM remains vital for addressing regional security issues,” Collins said. “Working together ensures we can create regional solutions to meet challenges like strategic competition and climate events.”
New Zealand plays a significant role in South Pacific defence through disaster relief, leadership training, and technical assistance. The 11th SPDMM also welcomed Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General Baron Waqa as a guest for the first time.
Key topics of discussion include climate-induced disaster response, transnational crime, and the use of emerging technology in maritime security. Collins highlighted the role of innovations like the Bluebottle uncrewed surface vessel, which can patrol vast Exclusive Economic Zones and perform surveillance missions, all powered by renewable energy.
The SPDMM ends October 3.
