A 67-year-old man has died following a car crash in Makaunga last Saturday, with police confirming the incident was caused by speeding and drunk driving.
The man’s son, who was driving under the influence of alcohol, lost control of the vehicle while speeding downhill towards Makaunga. The car swerved off the road and hit an electric pole, according to Saimone Fifita, Chief of Police at Mu’a Police Station in an interview with Tonga Broadcasting.
“The father was rushed to the hospital but died an hour later due to severe injuries,” Fifita said. Another passenger in the vehicle also succumbed to injuries at the scene.
Following the crash, the son fled but was apprehended by police the same evening.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities seek further details surrounding the accident.
