The Supreme Court has allegedly ordered Tatafu Moeaki, Governor of the National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT), Katalina Tohi of Broadcom 87.5FM, and Tevita Motulalo of Tonga Independent News to pay about $25 million to the Tonga Development Bank (TDB), revealed in a recent blog by ‘Etuini Liava’a and Radio TV Tonga International social media.
This ruling, delivered by Lord Chief Justice Malcolm Lesley Bishop, follows allegations of reputational damage and financial losses inflicted on TDB, CEO ‘Emeline Tuita, and Board Chairman Penisimani Vea.
According to Radio TV Tonga International’s Facebook post, ‘Emeline Tuita will receive $3 million, while Penisimani Vea is awarded $2 million. Teimumu Tapueluelu represented TDB, while Tevita ‘Aho served as the lawyer for the accused.
Both Tuita and Vea returned to work last week following the ruling.
No official statements have been released by TDB or NRBT regarding the decision.
