A gunman opened fire at Campus Risbergska, an adult education center in Örebro, on Tuesday, resulting in approximately 10 fatalities, including the shooter.
The final death toll and number of wounded remain undetermined due to extensive damage at the scene, according to local police chief Roberto Eid Forest.
The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time, approximately 200 kilometers west of Stockholm. The suspected gunman, a 35-year-old man not previously known to authorities, is believed to have acted alone. Police have found no indications of terrorism and are investigating the motive.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the day as “a very painful day for all of Sweden.” He added, “My thoughts are also with all those whose normal school day was exchanged for terror. Being confined to a classroom with fear for your own life is a nightmare that no one should have to experience.”
Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as students and staff sought safety. Teacher Lena Warenmark told SVT News that there were unusually few students on campus after a national exam that morning. She recounted hearing “probably 10 gunshots.”
Student Andreas Sundling, 28, described the harrowing experience to Expressen newspaper: “We heard three bangs and loud screams.” He and others barricaded themselves in a classroom during the ordeal.
Campus Risbergska serves students over 20, offering courses including Swedish for immigrants and vocational training. School attacks are rare in Sweden, though there have been incidents in recent years involving other weapons.
Authorities are working to identify the deceased and provide support to those affected. The investigation is ongoing as the nation grapples with this unprecedented tragedy.
