During a transit stopover in Hawai’i en route to visiting several Pacific Island nations, Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te visited the East-West Center today for an informal private discussion attended by approximately 100 invited guests on the topic of “A Future of Mutual Prosperity: Taiwan as a Partner for Peace and Prosperity in the Indo-Pacific Region.”
Joining Lai in the discussion were East-West Center President Suzanne Vares-Lum; Ambassador James Moriarty, former chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan; and Dr. Richard Vuylsteke, former head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan, who also served as the previous president of the East-West Center.
Both of Mr. Lai’s immediate predecessors made similar visits to the Center during transits in Hawai’i.
Prior to the off-the-record discussion, East-West Center President Suzanne Vares-Lum said: “The East-West Center is delighted to host Mr. Lai Ching-te this afternoon and to hear his thoughts on Taiwan’s commitment to regional peace and security, and economic collaboration with the United States.
In the Center’s six decades, more than 2,600 participants from Taiwan have taken part in our educational and professional-exchange programs, including scholars, students, and professionals in government, business, and journalism. They are among thousands of fellow knowledge-seekers who make Taiwan the fifth-largest source of international students in the US.”
