The Tapuhia Landfill has introduced dedicated drop-off stations to enhance bulky waste segregation and management.
Waste Authority Limited (WAL) has launched new drop-off stations at Tapuhia Landfill, aiming to streamline the segregation of bulky waste items. This initiative encourages residents to pre-sort their waste, particularly hazardous materials, before arrival.
“Before you drop off your bulky waste, please help us by sorting them from home, especially all the hazardous waste,” WAL stated. “The staff will assist and direct you when you reach Tapuhia Landfill.”
The landfill operates Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and on Saturdays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.
This development follows WAL’s earlier efforts to process green waste separately, producing compost material for gardening and reducing landfill fire risks.
However, concerns have been raised about the landfill’s capacity. Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Taniela Fusimalohi highlighted that Tapuhia, originally designed for a 50-year lifespan, might reach capacity within 10 to 15 years due to escalating waste accumulation.
The introduction of these drop-off stations is part of WAL’s broader strategy to extend the landfill’s operational life and promote sustainable waste management practices across Tonga.
