TikTok announced it will be “forced to go dark” on Sunday unless the Biden administration provides immediate assurances against enforcing a ban upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court’s decision mandates that TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, divest its ownership due to national security concerns.
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew expressed determination, saying, “We will do everything in our power to ensure our platform thrives.”
Former President Donald Trump, an active TikTok user with over 60 billion views, commented, “My decision on TikTok will be made in the not too distant future, but I must have time to review the situation.”
The Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized the U.S. actions, saying, “It is sheer robbers’ logic to try every means to snatch from others all the good things that they have.”
TikTok’s potential shutdown would affect over 170 million American users.
