A Tofoa retailer has been fined $500 by Tonga’s Ministry of Revenue and Customs for issuing an improper Consumption Tax (CT) receipt.
The fine, under Section 89(4) of the Revenue Services Administration Act 2021, followed a public complaint lodged earlier this month. A formal investigation confirmed the business had failed to comply with CT requirements.
In a statement, the Ministry praised the public’s vigilance and urged consumers to report suspected CT violations by calling 0800-111 or visiting the Inland Revenue office at Tungi Colonnade.
“This enforcement action underscores the Ministry’s commitment to tax law compliance and fair business practices in Tonga,” the Ministry stated.
The Ministry’s action comes amid broader efforts to enhance transparency and integrity in the country’s business environment. The fine serves as a reminder for all businesses to ensure compliance with revenue laws.
This case highlights the importance of consumer vigilance and the role of public reporting in maintaining accountability and fairness in Tonga’s taxation system.
