The governments of Tonga and Australia reaffirmed their deep and enduring partnership during the 2025 High-Level Consultations held in Nuku’alofa last week.
The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in economic resilience, climate change, labour mobility, health, and collective security, including cyber security and transnational crime.
Both governments agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship through a new partnership arrangement, reflecting their commitment to a genuine and respectful alliance grounded in people-centred development.
Tonga reiterated its support for a Pacific-hosted COP31, while Australia confirmed its ongoing assistance for Tonga’s establishment of the Pacific Resilience Facility. Australia also acknowledged Tonga’s regional leadership within the Pacific Policing Initiative.
The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Paula Ma’u, Tonga’s Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet, and Ms. Elizabeth Peak, Head of the Office of the Pacific at Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Mr. Ma’u emphasized the shared values underpinning the partnership. “Our partnership is genuine and respectful, grounded in people-centred development. We share respect for democracy, sovereignty, and rules of law; these shared values bind our partnership,” he said.
Ms. Peak highlighted the enduring connections between the two countries, noting, “Our two countries hold enduring people-to-people links, nurtured through institutional, educational, cultural, church and sporting relationships and growing diaspora connections.”

She added, “We have ambition for our relationship. Together we will stand together and face the significant challenges of our time including climate change, strategic competition and economic uncertainty.”
The consultations also addressed travel and migration issues, including opportunities under the new Pacific Engagement Visa. Discussions encompassed Australia’s support for various infrastructure, agriculture, and trade projects, ensuring alignment with Tonga’s economic priorities.
Regular and open dialogue remains the foundation of the Tonga-Australia relationship, enabling both countries to navigate shared challenges and embrace new opportunities.
The next High-Level Consultations are scheduled to be hosted in Australia in 2026.
