The Health Minister has formalised a partnership with China’s Qilu Hospital to enhance medical collaboration.
Hon. Dr. Ana ‘Akau’ola signed the agreement during a visit to Shandong Province, with Ministry of Health CEO Dr. Reynold ‘Ofanoa witnessing the event. The deal aims to enhance medical training, exchange programmes, and resource sharing between Tonga and the Chinese institution.
The Chinese Embassy in Tonga hailed the agreement as a “new milestone” in bilateral health cooperation. During her visit, Dr. ‘Akau’ola also toured Liaocheng Hospital to explore further collaboration opportunities.
This development follows a series of health-focused engagements between the two nations. In February, China donated over $57,000 pa’anga to support Tonga’s dengue fever response, exceeding the initial request of $33,000. Dr. ‘Akau’ola expressed gratitude, stating, “We asked for $33,000, and you have given us much more than expected”.
A China-aid medical team also arrived in Tonga in July 2024 for a year-long mission at Vaiola Hospital, providing expertise in various specialties.
The strengthened partnership highlights Tonga’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes through international collaboration.
