Tonga has officially established diplomatic relations with San Marino, marking a new chapter in international cooperation. The signing ceremony took place last Tuesday at San Marino’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
Representing Tonga, His Excellency Viliami Va‘inga Tōnē, Permanent Representative to the UN, signed the agreement alongside San Marino’s Ambassador, Damiano Beleffi.
Tōnē highlighted the significance of this step, emphasizing the importance of strengthening ties between the two nations. The agreement aims to expand collaboration in political, economic, social, and cultural fields.
Discussions also covered areas of mutual interest, including trade, tourism, and visa accessibility. Both sides expressed their commitment to fostering continued cooperation.
San Marino, founded in 301 AD, is the world’s oldest republic and the third-smallest state in Europe, entirely surrounded by Italy. Despite its small size, San Marino maintains an extensive diplomatic network and active foreign policy.
Prior to this agreement, San Marino had no formal diplomatic relations with Pacific nations, including Tonga. This new relationship aims to strengthen ties and explore mutual interests.
