The Government of Tonga, in partnership with Australia, has launched two initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of Tongan migrant workers and their families.
The “KO E KAKAI, ʻIKAI KO E PALOPALEMA” study examines the social impacts of temporary labour mobility, highlighting both positive and negative effects on family dynamics and community well-being. The research, funded by Australia, provides recommendations for improving Tonga’s labour mobility programs.
A second initiative, the Family Accompaniment pilot program, allows Tongan workers to bring their families while employed in Australia. The program seeks to reduce emotional strain and enhance mental well-being for workers separated from their loved ones for long periods.
Australian High Commissioner to Tonga, H.E. Brek Batley, voiced support for the programs, stating, “We are excited to support the Government of Tonga’s efforts in completing the social impacts study and implementing the Family Accompaniment pilot Round 2 program, which provided invaluable insights and support to Tongan workers and their families.”
Tonga’s Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized that these initiatives strengthen the country’s labour mobility policies while fostering sustainable development and family stability.
